Del Mar / La Jolla, California
The next to last day of the trip started out with a drive up the coast. I had seen a news report about Mount Soledad and the trouble San Diego was in for maintaining a religious symbol on public land. I wanted to see it before someone made them tear it down. Below is the cross at the memorial; they also have photos and names of people who had served and been killed in the Korean War. It's a beautiful view from the monument too. Below that is a picture of me from the memorial looking out toward the beach.

Below is a panoramic view from the memorial toward the beach and Del Mar. You can also (barely) see a pier about half-way up the beach. That is the pier for Scripps Institute (see further below).

A bit further north up the coast is the Birch Aquarium at the Scripps Institute at the University of California, San Diego. There is an outside observation area. The two pictures below were taken there. First is a view toward the La Jolla (that's pronounced "La HOY ya") caves; then a tree that has been bent by the winds blowing in off the ocean.

Inside the Aquarium they have a lot of information on marine animals and even some of the animals themselves. The fellow below is quite a large lobster.

This picture looks like I did some scuba diving in the Bahamas, but it isn't. This was inside the Aquarium.

Though you cannot see them very well, inside this aquarium are baby Sea Horses that were born on the day I arrived in San Diego -- four days before this visit to Birch Aquarium.
