Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz commanded U.S. naval operations in the Pacific during World War II. He was from Fredericksburg. A museum has been set up in downtown dedicated to him and those who served during the war. George Bush (senior) also has a bulding dedicated to him. To the right and below is a Garden of Peace given by the people of Japan "with prayers for everlasting world peace ...."

At the museum they have many artefacts from ships in the Pacific. Below is the conning tower from a submarine. Below to the left is a memorial set up to U.S. Presidents who served during World War II.

A couple of models they have at the museum are shown below. To the left is a model of the carrier U.S.S. Nimitz (named in honor of Admiral Nimitz); to the right is a model of the U.S.S. Missouri -- the battleship on which the surrender was signed. That ship is now at the Pearl Harbor memorial in Hawaii.
