San Diego / Coronado, California
We had heard about the Hotel del Coronado from some friends, and we got a really good deal from American Airlines, so that is where we decided to stay. It was quite nice to say the least. If you've seen the movie "Some Like it Hot" with Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon, this is where the hotel part of the movie was filmed. In the movie, it's supposed to be in Florida. Below are some of examples of the hotel grounds -- the beautiful red tree is a Bougainvillea. The flowers and trees are really gorgeous!

Next are a couple of pictures of the beach from the Hotel del. The first one is about the best sunset picture there was due to what is called the "Marine Layer" -- clouds that form over the ocean and move over land at night, then back off during the day.

The first afternoon/evening we were there, we took a "sunset sailing cruise" -- a rented sailboat and captain for a two-hour sail in San Diego harbor. This sunset view of the Coronado Bridge shows the infamous "Marine Layer."

While we were out there, the Navy Seals (who have a base on Coronado) were practicing being picked up out of the water. The picture on the left show a couple in the water; the one on the right shows one heading up to the helicopter.
